June 29, 2010—-Elizabethtown, IL to Beech Grove, KY (75 Miles) (
The sun shines bright in the old Kentucky home, The young folks roll on the little cabin floor, http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-states/il/elizabethtown/287126480748466368 Ahhhh finally some familiar territory—-My Old Kentucky Home. After 36 days in the saddle it is pleasing to be in back home in the bluegrass state. After 10 miles and passing through the teeny town of Cave In Rock we traveled by ferry across the vast waters of the Ohio, Taking the first few steps on Kentucky felt refreshing as well as rewarding to say the least. Nothing too much has really changed—it still ranks as the best state by far. Soon enough, after snapping hundreds of pictures at the state line we traveled into our first KY town of Marion. The people seemed friendly as ever and the town intensified the homey feeling. The next 50 miles presented itself with many hills and much added humidity. Dixon, was our lunch spot for the day which I thoroughly enjoyed right on the courthouse lawn consisting of the same lunch as the other day. Soon enough with much anticipation we arrived in Beech Grove, our final destination for the day, and had the wondrous opportunity of staying at Jessica Paulsen’s house—-one of our friends back at WKU. The family provided us with a place to stay for the night, showers, and endless amounts of food including hot dogs, hamburgers, and even birthday cake to celebrate Jessica’s and Wade’s belated birthday. The night was full of conversing, corn hole, and even some more fusball (which I sucked at again). It was a nice first stay in the home state and we could not wait for the next few days to approach.
‘Tis summer, the darkies are gay;
The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom,
While the birds make music all the day.
All merry, all happy and bright;
By ‘n’ by Hard Times comes a-knocking at the door,
Then my old Kentucky home, goodnight.
